About Paul

Paul studied law at Cambridge University and Harvard Law School and was called to the Bar in 1991, taking silk in 2009. He has been a member of Wilberforce Chambers in Lincolns Inn since he completed his pupillage there.

His practice is focused on pensions and financial services, including related professional negligence issues, and covers both litigation and advisory work, often of a highly technical nature.

Paul acts for some of the largest UK occupation pension schemes and FTSE 100 companies, as well as several major life insurers and a number of public sector and industry-wide schemes.

He has also acted for public bodies such as the Pensions Regulator, the Pension Protection Fund and the Financial Services Compensation Scheme. His financial services practice has given him broad experience of problems in SIPPs and other personal pension schemes, including tax, mis-selling and investment issues.

Paul is consistently ranked in the legal directories as a band 1 pensions silk. He is former Chairman of the Trustees of the Bar Council Staff Pension & Life Assurance Fund and has often found his practical knowledge of operating a prominent scheme useful in advising clients on pensions issues.

A substantial amount of Paul's work has involved dealing with errors in pension schemes, and he has used this experience to write a book, A Practitioners Guide to Correcting Mistakes in Pension Schemes, which was published by Bloomsbury Professional in March 2022. For this, Paul was awarded the prestigious Wallace Medal by the Association of Pension Lawyers in November 2022.

Paul has had a longstanding interest in legal history, and has recently been awarded a PhD by the London School of Economics for his thesis on Law Reporting in the Nisi Prius courts (1795-1865).

Paul spends the limited spare time he has watching football (as a long-suffering Spurs fan), reading and going to the cinema.

"An absolutely brilliant advocate – a straight-talking person who does not sugar coat the situation. He fights like his life depends on it to put your best points across."
